The history of Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport/Santiago International Airport (airport code SCL) goes back several decades. Construction on this particular airport started in 1961 after the local authorities saw that the city of Santiago and its surrounding metropolitan area were growing at a very rapid rate and that the city clearly needed a large airport to cater to modern jets and increasing demands.

The main international airport for Chile and Santiago at the time was Los Cerrillos Airport, but when Santiago International Airport opened up in 1967, Los Cerrillos started to see much less traffic. SCL airport was originally known under the name Aeropuerto Internacional de Pudahuel when it opened up in October of '67 but was renamed Air Commodore Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in 1980 in honor of Arturo Merino Benitez, a Chilean avaition pioneer who founded the Chilean Air Force and local airline LATAM Airlines.

The 1990s saw some big expansion at Santiago International Airport with a new international terminal opening up in 1994. SCL airport suffered some damages in the 2010 earthquake that rocked large parts of the country and had to shut down for a few days but was able to recover quite quickly. Expansions and improvements are currently under way at SCL airport as part of a new master plan to help the airport cope with many more passengers in the years to come.
