The history of airport code SFO, San Francisco International Airport, goes back to the 1920s. It was in 1927 that the City and County of San Francisco organized a lease for around 150 acres of land that would go on to be used for the construction of SFO airport. The airport was originally named Mills Field Municipal Airport of San Francisco and opened up in May of 1927.

It was in 1931 that the airport's name was changed to San Francisco Airport, with the 'International' part being added in the late 1940s. As with many other airports all around North America, SFO came under the control of the United States military when World War II broke out. It was used as a base for both the Army Air Corps and the Coast Guard. When the war ended, SFO started to see a lot of growth and expansion as new international routes were added to its timetables and many more airlines began operating in and out of the city of San Francisco.

In the years that followed, especially as San Francisco became a leading light in various industrial, technical, and cultural fields and attracting many more visitors and residents, the airport underwent a lot of improvements. In the modern era, SFO airport has four runways and four terminals, with seven unique concourses and over 110 gates.
