There are thousands of different airports all around the world. Some major cities, like New York, London, or Paris, even have multiple major airports as they have too much air traffic for any one airport to cope. Each airport has its own name and history, and the vast majority of them are also given three letter codes called airport codes or IATA location identifiers. These simple codes allow us to quickly and easily identify an airport and are very important for the global aviation industry. Sacramento airport code is SMF. SMF is the airport code used for Sacramento International Airport. CDC information for travelers. Hours/availability may have changed.

Sacramento International Airport was originally known under the name Sacramento Metropolitan Airport when it opened in October of 1967. The airport code SMF comes from the fact that the airfield was originally called Sacramento Metropolitan Field. At the time of its opening SMF airport had just one runway. The main airport for the Sacramento area at the time was Sacramento Municipal Airport, which has since been renamed to Sacramento Executive Airport. SMF was actually the first public-use airport located on the western side of the Mississippi River when it opened up.

Only five airlines operated at SMF airport in the early days, but it started to grow exponentially in the years that followed. The 1980s saw a lot of development at SMF airport including the construction of a second runway. It was during the 1990s that the airport was renamed Sacramento International Airport, but international flights didn't actually start at SMF until 2002. New airlines started operating at SMF airport in the early 2000s and the airport has seen a lot of big developments and renovations in recent years, becoming one of the leading smaller airports for the state of California.
