The next time you decide to travel by air, pay close attention to all the information on your boarding pass and baggage stickers. You’ll see your name and flight number, as well as special three letter codes. These codes, known as IATA airport codes or IATA location identifiers, are used to designate airports around the world. Instead of using airport names, which can often be long-winded and change over time, airport codes allow aviation staff to distinguish between airports quickly and simply. One of the airport codes for the biggest city in China. Shanghai, is PVG. PVG is the airport code for Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

Pudong International Airport was not originally one of the main airports for Shanghai. Before PVG was even built, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport was the main airport for the city. In the 1990s, as more people were living in Shanghai and visiting the city from all around the world, it became clear that larger facilities were needed, but Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport had reached its limits and couldn't be expanded any further to cope with the increased demand.

It was therefore decided that a brand-new airport be built in the Shanghai area to help alleviate some of the pressure and guarantee that air travel in and out of China's biggest city would be able to continue without any crises for the foreseeable future. It was actually Professor Chen Jiyu of East China Normal University who suggested a location on the bank of the Yangtze River in the Pudong development zone and the authorities agreed with this idea.

Construction for Shanghai Pudong International Airport started in the late 1990s. The project cost over 1.6 billion dollars but was finished on time in 1999. In the years that followed, additional facilities were built like a second runway and second terminal building. A lot more money has been invested in the airport since then and it now features a grand total of five runways, with plans in place for even more expansion in the coming years, including a satellite terminal which is set to be the biggest of its kind on the planet.
