Before Munich Airport was built, the city of Munich was served by another airport named Munich-Riem Airport. Munich-Riem opened up in 1939, but as the city began to grow, it needed to expand and develop quite swiftly to cope with the high levels of air traffic. In 1954, airport authorities saw that the city's population was growing and the number of visitors to the city was also increasing, so plans started to be put into motion to potentially construct a second airport in the Munich area.

It took many years for these plans to actually come to fruition, with a site being chosen in 1969 and construction not actually starting unil 1980. In the meantime, Munich-Riem had to cope with the rising demands of modern air travel as well as it could. MUC airport finally opened up in May of 1992, with Munich-Riem Airport closing down and being fully replaced by the new Munich Airport.

In German, the airport is called Flughafen München Franz Josef Strauß as it is named after a German politician of the Christian Social Union of the same name who was a major chairman in Bavaria an dhelped to launch the Airbus project in Europe. Munich Airport, which was built to be much larger and better equipped than the former Munich-Riem Airport, easily managed to cope with the high amounts of traffic in and out of Munich and has served hundreds of millions of passengers during its relatively short lifetime so far.
