Velana International Airport, also sometimes called Malé International Airport due to its location near the capital city of Malé, has a history dating back to the 1960s. Back then, the island of Hulhulé was inhabited and the airport was known as Hulhulé Airport. It opened in October of 1960 and featured a small, simple runway made of steel sheets. This runway measured up at just 3,000 feet in length, with the first commercial flight not landing at this airport until nearly two years later in April of 1962.

In 1964, the Maldives government decided to organize the construction of a better and longer runway. Interestingly, in order to speed up construction, the government actually offered a cash prize to whoever could finish the runway fastest. It was done by 1966 and officially inaugurated the then-President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Nasir. It was in the 1970s that tourism in the Maldives really started to take off and the country needed a strong international airport in order to cater to all the foreign tourists who wanted to visit.

It was decided that Hulhule Airport was the best candidate for this role, and the airport was expanded and given a new name of Malé International Airport. In the years that followed, MLE airport grew further and became highly popular as a great way for international travelers to access the Maldives. It was in 2017 that the airport got another new name of Velana International Airport in honor of Ibrahim Nasar who was born to the Velaanaage family.
