LHR is an airport with many decades of history behind it. It was in the 1920s that plans for the airport really began to take shape. In 1929, Fairley Aviation started buying up many dozens of acres of farmland in the little hamlet of Heathrow to turn into an airport. LHR was opened and declared operational in 1930. It was originally called Harmondsworth Aerodrome and also known as Heathrow Aerodrome, but its name was later changed to 'The Great West Aerodrome'.

It was mainly used for aircraft testing and assembly in its early years, with Croydon Airport being the main commercial airport for the city of London. When World War II broke out, the airport came under the control of the Royal Air Force, but was only used for diversion purposes. Plans were in place for the airport to be requisitioned by the military and adapted to suit the development, construction, and flights of long-range bombers. These plans led to much construction and development at Heathrow, so when the war ended, that development continued, but with commercial traffic and flights in mind.

The airport was renamed London Airport in the late 1940s and opened for civilian use, with many new runways and facilities being built. The airport was then renamed Heathrow Airport in 1966, with additional terminal buildings being constructed and opened, with Queen Elizabeth II herself being present for the formal inauguration of the major terminals. In the 1970s, Heathrow expanded even further, with the London tube network stretching out to include a stop at Heathrow in 1977, establishing a key ground transportation link between the airport and the city of London.

In the 1980s, tens of millions of passengers were using Heathrow and it was developing into one of the biggest airports on the planet. Terminal 4 was built and opened to cope with all the traffic, and a Terminal 5 would eventually open up some years later, in 2008. More plans for expansion are in place for Heathrow in the future, and the airport has consistently outranked Gatwick Airport as the primary and most popular airport for use of travel in and out of London.

Getting To and From LHR

LHR is actually one of the easiest airports in the world to get to and is served by many different public transportation links. The airport has its own train service, the Heathrow Express, which operates directly into London's Paddington station every 15 minutes. The journey itself only takes 15 minutes too from Heathrow Central Station, and this is the fastest way into London from LHR. You can also use a TFL rail service which is cheaper but slower, or use the tube service from four different stations around the airport as another way to get into London. Various buses and coaches, as well as taxis, can be found around the airport too and offer routes both into London and elsewhere around the United Kingdom.

Getting Around LHR

Due to the vast size of LHR airport, it can seem quite daunting for passengers trying to get around. Fortunately, the airport has a lot of good ground transportation links and services to help you get around. Some of the parking lots, for example, are served by shuttles to take you directly over to the terminal buildings. The terminals themselves are linked by trains and buses.
