The history of LaGuardia Airport, which has the airport code LGA, goes back many decades. The land that would eventually be used for the construction of LGA airport was originally used as a theme park called Gala Amusement Park. In 1929, the park was destroyed to make way for a private airfield called Glenn H. Curtiss Airport in honor of one of the founders of the American aviation industry. It was in the 1930s that the idea of converting LGA to a civilian airport for commercial use was suggested by the Mayor of New York at the time, Fiorello La Guardia.

La Guardia had flown into Newark Airport, which was the only major airport for New York City at the time but was located in New Jersey, and believed that the city deserved a major airport in its own state. In the years that followed, La Guardia's idea gained traction and a site was chosen in Queens. Construction started in the late 1930s and the airport was opened up in 1939. In the years that followed, LaGuardia expanded and developed greatly, taking over from Newark Airport as the main airport for New York City. JFK would eventually become the city's major airport, but LaGuardia has continued to be one of the big three locations for people flying in and out of the Big Apple.
