Domestic and international travel has never been simpler, and it’s getting even easier over time, all thanks to modern travel technology and improvements. With each passing year, airlines are becoming more effective and efficient, and airports are becoming better equipped and developed to cater to the millions of passengers that pass through them each year. There are thousands of airports all over the globe. Each airport has a name, but it also has its own airport code, known as an IATA airpor code or IATA location identifier. For the city of Houston in Texas, there are actually two major airport codes to be aware of: IAH for George Bush Intercontinental Airport and HOU for William P. Hobby Airport.

Of the two major Houston airports, HOU and IAH, William P. Hobby Airport is the oldest. It was built and opened up back in 1927 and was originally simply used as a private landing airfield known as W.T. Carter Field. It was later bought up by the city of Houston and renamed Houston Municipal Airport and then Howard R. Hughes Airport in the late 1930s, with Howard Hughes being an engineer and pilot who helped improve the airport.

In the decades that followed, the airport was very popular and one of the top airports in the United States, becoming known as Houston International Airport in 1954. However, in the 1960s, as large passenger jets began to be used more frequently, the airport started to suffer. It didn't have enough space or the right facilities to cope with this new traffic, with other major airports around Texas and the rest of the United States becoming more popular.

In 1967, the airport was given its current name of William P. Hobby Airport in honor of a former Governor of Texas, but plans were already in place for another airport to take over in the Houston area. That airport, which would eventually become known as George Bush Intercontinental Airport, was opened in 1969 and called Houston Intercontinental Airport. All passenger service from William P. Hobby Airport was redirected to IAH airport.

Plans were in place to shut down HOU airport entirely, but it remained open and, a couple of years later, was used for many passenger flights again as airline traffic numbers to Houston were very high and the city actually needed both airports to work together to cope. IAH was eventually renamed George Bush Intercontinental Airport/Houston, in honor of George H. W. Bush, the 41st President, and both airports have seen various expansions and developments in the years since then.
