Officially known as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong is a special administrative region in the southern part of China. It is located on the Pearl River estuary and covers around 426 square miles of land. Over 7 million people live in Hong Kong, making it one of the most densely populated regions on the planet. A region with a very interesting history, Hong Kong was once a colony of the British Empire but was returned to China in the late 1990s. Since then, it has operated in a unique way with its own administrations and systems of government, separate from the rest of China.

The history of Hong Kong International Airport dates back many decades. The name 'Hong Kong International Airport' was originally given to another airport, also known as Kai Tak Airport, which was constructed in 1925 in the Kowloon City District. Due to its busy location, this airport quickly ran out of space for expansion and couldn't cope as levels of air traffic started to rise. In the 1990s, Kai Tak was an immensely busy airport with delays every single day.

It was therefore decided that a new airport needed to be built to replace Kai Tak Airport as the main international airport for the region of Hong Kong. Prior surveys of the region had identified a good location on the little island of Chek Lap Kok. This location was chosen and construction on the airport began, with the new Hong Kong International Airport opening up in 1998.
