If you’re a frequent flyer, you might have noticed three letter codes appearing on your baggage stickers and flight tickets over the years. These three letter codes are known as IATA airport codes or IATA location identifiers. Almost every commercial airport around the world has one of these codes in order for aviation staff to quickly and easily identify them. Airport names can change over time, but airport codes are permanent and entirely unique. For the city of Fort Lauderdale in Florida, the airport code is FLL, which is used to designate Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport. CDC information for travelers. Hours/availability may have changed.

Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport has an interest that goes back to the 1920s. In 1929, an airport named Merle Fogg Airport was constructed and opened up on an old, abandoned golf course. The airport was used sparingly in the following years and came under the control of the United States Navy when World War II broke out.

At that time, the airport was renamed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale and used for various military purposes in the years that followed. The station classed down in 1946 after the war had ended and the airport was once again under the control of the county authorities. It was renamed Broward County International Airport, with various new passenger routes opening up, primarily to the Caribbean.

In 1959, FLL was given its current name due to its location between the two cities of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. In the years that followed, as Florida and the Caribbean became more and more popular with travelers, FLL airport was expanded and developed to cater to increasing demand and traffic. In recent years, even more airlines have announced plans to operate at FLL airport and the number of passengers has risen exponentially.
