The history of Dallas Love Field goes back over a century. Plans for the construction of this airport were first laid out in 1917 by the United States Army. As the United States declared entry into World War I, the army set about creating dozens of new training camps and airfields around the United States. Dallas Love Field was one of those airfields. It was named after Moss. L. Love who tragically died in a plane crash in 1913 during a military test. The airfield was constructed and opened for use in 1917, being primarily used for flight training during the First World War.

It was still used for military purposes when the war ended, all the way through to World War II, when it was again used for training and other military purposes. After the war, commercial flights started operating at DAL through airlines like American Airlines and Pioneer Airlines. Additional terminals and facilities were built in the years that followed as DAL became the main commercial airport for the city of Dallas. However, when Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened up in 1974, DAL saw a drastic reduction in traffic.

Large X's were painted on the runways to actually let pilots know that they shouldn't land there and almost all flights were moved over to DFW. A lot of the concourses at Dallas Love Field were put out of action and converted into entertainment areas like an ice rink and video game arcades. However, in recent years, DAL has seen a bit of a rebirth, with some major airlines operating new routes to this particular airport and many passengers seeing it as a good alternative to the much busier DFW.
