The history of Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) goes back many years. The land on which the airport would eventually be built was originally part of the Jungfernheide forest. In the early 1900s, an aircraft hangar was built on that land, with the airfield being used for military purposes during World War I. The airport was also used for military training and other military purposes during World War II. After this period of global conflict, the airfield was set to be converted into gardens, but that plan was canceled due to the development of the Berlin Blockade and the beginning of the Cold War.

It was seen that the main airport for Berlin at the time, Berlin Tempelhof Airport, just wasn't big enough to cope with changing times, so the Tegel area was developed and used by various Allied military forces. TXL didn't see any commercial flights until the late 1950s, with big airlines like Air France and Pan American World Airways beginning to operate there. In the years that followed, TXL took over as the main commercial airport for Berlin and one of the key airports for Germany in general.

In 1988, TXL was officially renamed Berlin Tegel "Otto Lilienthal" Airport in honor of a German aviation pioneer who was nicknamed 'the flying man'. TXL saw a lot of development over the years but was set to close in 2012 due to the construction and scheduled opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. However, Berlin Brandenburg Airport has seen a lot of delays, leading to TXL staying open to continue serving Berlin and the surrounding area.
