The history of Beijing Capital International Airport dates back to the 1950s. The airport was officially opened in March of 1958. It was quite a small airport at the time, featuring just one small terminal building. It wasn't until 1980 that a new, much larger Terminal 1 building was constructed. Even this terminal was deemed to be far too small a decade later, and Terminal 2 was constructed and opened up in 1999.

Terminal 1 had to be expanded after that, and Terminal 3 was built just in time for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. PEK airport can cope with large amounts of traffic, but still isn't quite big enough to cater to a city the size of Beijing, so plans have recently been announced regarding the construction of another airport for the city out near Langfang in Hebei Province.
