There are thousands of airports all around the world, each with their own names, histories, and facilities. Every airport's name is subject to change over the years, and some of the biggest airports on the planet have been known under many names over the years, but one thing that remains permanent and unchanging for each airport is its IATA location identifier. Also known as an airport code, these three letter identifiers are unique to each airport and help to quickly and easily identify them. If you're traveling to the province of Bali in Indonesia, there's only one airport code you need to know. The main airport in Bali is Ngurah Rai International Airport, which has the IATA airport code DPS.

Bali airport code DPS, Ngurah Rai International Airport, has a history dating back to the 1930s. Back then, it was known under the name Pelabuhan Udara Tuban (Tuban Airfield). This airfield was built in 1931 on the southern coast of Bali. In the 1940s, during World War II, the airfield saw a lot of action. It was bombed by Japanese military forces and actually seized by the Japanese in 1942. Originally, the Balinese military were supposed to destroy the airfield to prevent it from falling into Japanese hands, but the instructions of the Dutch commanding officer had been misunderstood by the Balinese demolition experts, allowing the Japanese to take control of the airfield and use it for their aircraft.

While under Japanese control, the airfield actually saw many improvements like a runway extension. In the late 1940s, a terminal building was built as well and the airport continued to expand and develop in the 50s and 60s, with an international terminal building opening up in 1969. It was around this time that the airport was given its new name of Ngurah Rai International Airport in honor of I Gusti Ngurah Rai, a Balinese military commander who was a key figure in the Indonesian War of Independence. In recent years, DPS airport has seen huge surges in traffic numbers. In the year 2000, it saw over 4 million passengers, but that number had risen to over 11 million just a decade later as Bali and the rest of Indonesia became more popular touristic locations.
