History of Airport Code AUH

Abu Dhabi International Airport (airport code AUH) is a reasonably recent addition to the world of major global airports. The idea for this airport first came about in 1974 as the government of the United Arab Emirates sought to modernize the nation and improve facilities in the various emirates. The main airport for Abu Dhabi at the time was Al Bateen Airport, which was known as Abu Dhabi International Airport back then.

The ruler of Abu Dhabi at the time, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, saw that Al Bateen Airport didn't have much room for expansion, so decided that a new airport needed to be constructed. Through the late 1970s, surveys and research were carried out to find a suitable location for the new Abu Dhabi International Airport. A site was chosen and construction began in 1979, with the airport being officially inaugurated in 1982.

The airport featured a semi-circular terminal design with a circular satellite terminal beside it to offer more room for aircraft. It was an efficient design and the satellite terminal has since been expanded greatly. In addition, a Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 have been opened in the 2000s as the airport continues to expand and adapt in line with the rising popularity and tourism numbers in Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates in general.
