The history of Queen Beatrix International Airport (Aruba airport code AUA) goes back many decades. It was in the 1930s that the first passenger flights starting taking off from Aruba and heading over to nearby Curacao. A man named Manuel Viana ran this service, with commercial airline KLM starting a similar route in 1934 and naming their airport KLM Field. As with many other airports around the Caribbean, the airport came under the control of military forces during World War II.

The United States Army Air Forces took control of KLM Field to defend Aruba and other Caribbean islands from potential German attacks. During this time, the airport was renamed Dakota Airport and saw some of its facilities improved. After the war ended, the airport was used for commercial services once more and was named Princess Beatrix International Airport in honor of Beatrix of the Netherlands, who was princess at the time. When Beatrix became Queen in 1980, the airport's name was changed to Queen Beatrix International Airport. Beatrix has since abdicated the throne, but the name of the airport has remained the same in her honor.
