Abner Jackson Plantation Site is the site of a former thriving 19th-century sugar plantation in Lake Jackson, Texas. Today a tourist attraction, the site has the ruins of a sugar mill and offers monthly tours. The plantation, originally called Lake Place, was founded in 1842 and was one of three plantations developed by Major Abner Jackson. The 6400-acre sugar plantation was worked by more than 80 slaves, making Major Jackson one of the largest slave owners in Brazoria County. The plantation is now the State Antiquities Landmark, which reveals the real history of sugar plantations in Brazoria County. Visitors to the plantation site can learn about the sugar making process in the 1840s, about the role of slaves and how convict labor replaced slave labor during the 1870s. It also tells the story about how destructive the hurricane of 1900 was.
