Whether visitors come to Stowe Mountain Lodge in the winter or the summer, they will find an almost endless list of things to try, whether they be novices, experienced, timid, or daredevil. Winter guests usually come to Stowe Mountain Lodge for the skiing, both downhill and cross-country, and for the excellent snowboarding on powdery slopes. Lessons and clinics are available, as is equipment rental. Guides can take guests out on snowshoe courses, or lead a snowmobiling excursion. There is dog sledding, horseback riding through snow-covered forests, ice skating, and sleigh rides for two or for the whole family to enjoy. Winter visitors may like the warm interior of the woodcraft shop, where they can learn to make furniture.
Summer visitors will love the infinite number of ways to spend their days. Hiking is always a big draw. Guests can walk along easy lakeside trails, or can climb the steep paths of Mount Mansfield. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent for visitors who wish to enjoy their holiday out on the water. Horseback riding takes visitors through hardwood forests, into groves of tall spruce trees, and through meadows sparkling with the summer sun. Road bikes and mountain bikes can be rented at Stowe Mountain Lodge, and cyclists will relish excursions along narrow roadways or through the more than fifty miles of mountain biking trails that skirt the area.
Links fans can play the 18 holes of the Stowe Country Club, or take part in lessons and clinics offered for both children and adults. Speaking of children, Stowe Mountain Lodge has an adventure camp for children that takes them to the outdoors for summer fun and exercise. Tennis lovers, both novice and advanced, can play or take lessons at the tennis club across the street from the lodge.
Guests with a streak of the daredevil will love Stowe Mountain Lodge. A new program – zip lining – has just started at the lodge, and boasts the longest and one of the fastest zip lines in the United States. Participants soar high above the forest canopy of the Green Mountains. Treetop Adventures are another way to have heart-stopping fun. These adventures have guides who embolden visitors to move from tree to tree, high up in the forest, on increasingly difficult balance challenges. The scary nature of this activity is alleviated by the safety cables firmly securing each guest. Other guests might like to try guided rock climbing, or to soar high above Vermont in a hot air balloon.
There’s still more. Fishing experts can teach guests to fly fish, or lead them to the best fishing spots to catch local trout. Local wineries have tasting tours, there are day trips to Montreal, and drives up the Historic Toll Road on tailback curves. Through it all are beautiful days spent outdoors with the Green Mountain and Lake Champlain as backdrops to the fun. Weekend Getaways in Vermont: Stowe Mountain Lodge - Photo:
