The capital city of Pennsylvania has it all: historic architecture, peaceful green parks, the beautiful Susquehanna River, and modern industrial spaces, all of which are great for planning a wedding. Couples can opt to rent an entire farmhouse property for an indoor-outdoor bash, celebrate their nuptials with great beer and close friends at a brewpub bar overlooking the brewery operations, or in a modern performing arts center with a stage and a concert worthy AV setup. In Harrisburg, there are open-vendor venues that allow couples to plan every detail their own way, and also venues that act as a one-stop shop in order to ensure that planning a wedding is as low stress as possible, but the only thing that is for certain is that a wedding in Harrisburg will be an unforgettable event. More Ideas: Dutch Springs
Located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Dutch Springs is a spring-fed lake operated as an aqua park and scuba diving facility commercial recreation area. The history of Dutch Springs’ operation as a spring-fed lake dates back to the Great Depression, when the National Portland Cement Company purchased a plot of land in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the purposes of developing a cement manufacturing and limestone mining quarry.
During early mining operations, the quarry area filled with water due to natural runoff and weather conditions, a condition that plagued the quarry for the duration of its use throughout the mid-2oth century. Following the company’s closure in the 1970s, the quarry’s drain pumps were shut off, allowing the 50-acre quarry area to fill with water and become a natural lake area. The lake filled with a variety of fish populations, including yellow perch, palomino trout, zebra mussel, crayfish, and largemouth bass. In 1980, the lake and its surrounding land were converted into a freshwater diving facility and water amusement park, operated by Stu Schooley.
Rides and Attractions
Today, Dutch Springs is operated as a water attraction complex, offering scuba and snorkeling lessons and a variety of water rides for visitors of all ages. A number of attractions are submerged throughout the quarry, including a school bus, trolley, and fire truck, creating an underwater obstacle atmosphere for divers. The remains of the former pumping station of the National Portland Cement Company also serve as a popular dive site. Instructor-led scuba and snorkeling experiences are offered for beginner divers, and open water diving and swimming opportunities are available during operating hours, with safety personnel monitoring swim sites at all times. Diver certification testing is also completed at the facility using a variety of sunken wooden platforms throughout the lake.
The facility’s Aqua Park family entertainment center offers a variety of water rides and inflatable attractions for visitors of all ages and sizes. Rides include the Blob launchpad, which allows visitors to launch their friends on a 20-foot aerial jump onto an inflated cushion, and a 14-foot Iceberg, which doubles as a climbing wall and water slide. Climbing play experiences are also provided on The Summit and Aqua Jump, which offer bounce play and obstacle climbing experiences, and the spinning floating ball inflatable Saturn. Safe play experiences for younger visitors include the Water Totter inflatable seesaw and miniature versions of the Iceberg and Aqua Jump inflatables. The Wibit Tower provides a water race course that requires teamwork to complete, while the Sky Challenge high ropes course offers climbing course experiences out of the water.
In addition to Aqua Park attractions, Dutch Springs offers a variety of watercraft rentals for visitors of all ages, including Ocean Kayaks, Stand-Up Paddleboards, and animal-shaped Paddle Boats. All watercraft riders must wear a life vest at all times while aboard crafts, and all rentals of craft require a driver’s license deposit. Visitors may also rent Knockerball inflatable bubble soccer spheres for individual or team play.
Onsite camping and RV space is offered at the facility on Friday and Saturday nights between May and October, with select Sunday space available prior to major holidays falling on Mondays. Reservations are not required for campsites, which are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Climate-controlled bathhouse facilities and showers are offered, along with lake views at all sites. Rates are available for adults, seniors, and students, with children under five admitted to stay free with paying adult guardian.
Private rentals of Dutch Springs are available for groups and events, including corporate picnics, summer camps, family reunions, and school field trips. Park rentals are available on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday weeknights throughout the summer season, with party pavilions, tents, and bathhouses available for group use. Watercraft rental and catering packages may be added on to rental packages for an additional fee. Birthday party packages are available for rental for young visitors wishing to celebrate their birthdays at the facility, including add-on catering and activity rental packages. The park’s costumed character mascot, Splash the sled dog, may also be rented for appearances at parties and events.
The park’s NorthStar Adventure youth-focused team development and leadership program offers a variety of team-building experiences for corporate parties, scouting troops, and classroom groups, including climbing and nature activities for completion of scout badges. Overnight camping experiences are available as part of team-building rental packages, and adults or supervisors not participating in activities are admitted free for the duration of programming. Reservations for team-building activities must be made at least two to three weeks ahead of time.
Dutch Springs presents a variety of community-oriented events throughout the year in conjunction with local and regional nonprofit organizations, including the Dutch Springs P.L.A.Y. program, which emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning for community children’s groups, and the Dutch Springs Cares program, which aides local charities through admission proceed donations. Annual public special events also work in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity, the Wounded Warrior Project, and the Miracle League and CureSearch of the Lehigh Valley. An annual New Year’s Eve dive is also held at the facility for night diving experiences.
