Ava Gene's is an upscale Italian eatery in Portland, OR that is popular for serving fresh pasta made from scratch in-house. The flour is milled, extruded, rolled, cut, cooked, and sauced. The restaurant, founded in 2012 by Stumptown Coffee founder Duane Sorenson, has been voted one of Portland's best. The restaurant was purchased by progressive restaurateur Chef Joshua McFadden along with his partner Luke Dirks, who also jointly own the Submarine Hospitality and Tusk restaurants.

Ava Gene's menu is Roman-inspired and uses ingredients sourced from farmers and ranchers of the Pacific Northwest. Regional Italian wines, creative cocktails, and other bar drinks are perfect accompaniments for their Italian fares.

Ava Gene's is open daily from Monday to Thursday between 5:00pm and 10:00pm. On Fridays the restaurant is open from 5:00pm to 11:00pm, Saturdays from 4:30pm to 11pm and on Sundays the restaurant is open from 4:30pm to 10:00pm.


· Dinner - Salumi, formaggi, fritti, pane, giardini, primi that is house made, milled, and extruded, secondi, contorni, and family-style menu options when the table is fully occupied. The menu also offers a daily special Sunday to Saturday featuring sugo, meatballs, lasagna, sausage, rabbit, fish fry, and braciole.

· Family Style - Groups occupying two or more table get to sit back and share family-style menus that offer Italian-inspired meals specially selected by the chef.

· Drinks - The drinks menu offers a large variety of wines, beers, cocktails, and soft drinks. The restaurant creates a special cocktail every month for a special cause. A portion of these cocktail sales go to charitable causes within the community.

· Wine - Ava Gene's wine list offers a large variety of selected wines that are local favorites in Italy. These wines are sourced from family-owned wineries run by the farmers who use sustainable farming methods to produce wines that are free from chemicals and additives.

Private Events

Ava Gene’s sister restaurant, Tusk, has the perfect space for private dining and private dinner parties. Tusk can accommodate up to 28 guests with an option to choose between an a la carte menu and a family-style dining experience. The restaurant serves a Middle Eastern-inspired menu with a special emphasis on seasonal produce freshly supplied from local farms. The restaurant's events personnel can work with guests to customize a special menu to suit the event requirements and dietary needs.


Ava Gene’s supports its community of small farmers and artisans by sourcing all their ingredients from local producers. The restaurant's website displays a complete list of all the purveyors supporting the restaurant. Ava Gene's offers online reservations for up to five people, while reservations for parties consisting of six or more people need to be made by calling the restaurant directly.
