The Long Island Aquarium offers visitors a unique journey through a mixture of indoor and outdoor exhibits, aiming to showcase the majesty and beauty of the underwater world, which is still a relatively unseen and mysterious realm. The engaging and interactive journey educates and informs whilst being simultaneously fascinating and stimulating.
The large and varied indoor exhibits feature displays of animals from large and ferocious beasts such as the American alligator to the adorable combination of sea anemones and the families of clownfish that live with them in a symbiotic relationship. Nature is on display in all its different iterations here, and you can delight in the many shapes and forms it takes. There are exhibits that shine a spotlight on specific locations and habitats, such as the Amazon Rainforest or the Coral Reef, and there are also specific and themed displays such as the Lost City of Atlantis shark exhibit.
The outdoor exhibits are located alongside the Peconic River and invite visitors to explore the displays in a slightly more natural environment. Walking among the center’s beautifully reconstructed Atlantean-themed ruins, you can observe the Ancient Reptilian Ruins and the ancient corridors, which come alive at night with bats and other nightlife, or simply sit beside the picturesque koi pond.
Having been voted one of the top ten days out for kids by Parents Magazine, you can be sure that the interactive and exciting range of activities will keep the whole family entertained. Of particular note is the boat tour, which provides an educational touring classroom that will provide an in depth and factual dive into the aquatic life that surrounds us.
The aquarium hosts a range of guest speakers and lecturers and these unique opportunities to learn from some of the finest educators in the field should not be missed. Check the website to be kept abreast of upcoming events and lectures.
