Olean owes its existence to oil and timber. Olean was the main timber town in the region between 1830 and 1850 and then became an important oil storage and refining center after oil was discovered in the last quarter of the 19th century. The population of the town almost doubled around that time. Today visitors can anticipate enjoying the great outdoors as they walk/hike the beautiful Allegany River Valley Trail or explore the Rock City Park. If you love history and architecture you can visit the lovely Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels or take a stroll through Oak Hill Park Historic District to see a collection of late 19th century homes, business and religious buildings. Certain attractions may be temporarily closed or require advance reservations. Some restaurants are currently offering pickup only. Hours/availability may have changed.

Establishing Four Mile Brewing was a dream-come-true for three Olean craft beer enthusiasts. The brewery is located in the same premises which were once home to the Olean Brewing Company which closed down during the dark days of the Prohibition. Four Mile Brewing now has the privilege to bring brewing back to Olean. The brewery is located on site and visitors are welcome to take a tour to see how the beer is produced, from milling the malt in the mill room to tasting the final product as it leaves the bright tanks. As you enjoy a couple of the beers available on tap you can tuck into a tasty flatbread, sandwich or quesadilla.

The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels has been serving the spiritual needs of the Olean community since the first wooden “shanty” church was built in 1852. At that time the funds to build the church ($300) were collected from railroad workers. The church you see today was constructed in the Gothic Revival style between 1913 and 1915. Later, beautiful stained-glass windows were added. Between 1984 and 1990 a large restoration program uncovered beautiful paintings in the sanctuary which have been restored. Visitors are welcome to come and admire the beautiful interior of the basilica (free 45min tours focusing on the art and architecture of the basilica are available) or to join the community in celebrating Mass.

Owner/operator Sean Dixon brings a traditional Irish Pub culture to Olean. In the age-old Irish tradition, the pub is named for Sean’s mother Christina Talty. The pub offers residents and visitors a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where you can meet with friends to enjoy a couple of beers and listen to some good music. Thursday nights are Open-Mic nights when local musicians showcase their talents. The bar also serves a limited menu of traditional Pub-Grub including Guinness Beef Stew, Banger Sandwich (with Irish sausage, peppers and onions) and Shepherd’s Pie, just like your (Irish) granny used to make it. The bar is open 6 days a week from Tuesday to Sunday.

Family owned and operated for over 70 years, Angee’s restaurant is an Olean institution. The Italian restaurant was opened in 1948 by Italian immigrant Libratore Angelo Fratercangelo, who could not speak a word of English but knew a thing or two about good food. Today the restaurant is managed by his grandson Anthony. The menu features a long list of Italian classics including their famous fried meatballs, a mouth-watering Lasagna, Eggplant Parmigiana, several pasta dishes and Mussels Sophia. For those who prefer to stick to American classics, the menu features a good selection of burgers and sandwiches. Desserts include fresh Cannoli and Tiramisu.
