The first house in Fishkill was built back in 1709, which means that this pleasant small town has a lot of history to share. The unusual name of the town is derived from two Dutch words which mean fish and creek, or stream. You can learn about the pioneer days in Fishkill by visiting the Van Wyck Homestead Museum and the First Reformed Church of Fishkill. Outdoor activities include hiking up Beacon Mountain, kayaking on the Hudson River, and having family fun at the Splashdown Beach Water Park (in summer). When you have worked up a thirst you are invited to stop by the Piano Piano Wine Bar to taste some great wines by the glass. CDC information for travelers. Hours/availability may have changed.

Dating back to 1732, the Van Wyck Homestead Museum is housed in a Dutch colonial building which originally belonged to an aristocratic Dutch immigrant family. The original 3-roomed house was enlarged and due to its strategic location it was requisitioned by the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The Fishkill Historical Society is responsible for the continued protection of the historic building and has filled the museum with thousands of colonial era artifacts and period furnishings. Visitors can still admire the original kitchen with its open hearth. Guided tours of the house and the surrounding grounds are available by prior arrangement.

2.First Reformed Church of Fishkill

The First Dutch Reformed Church of Fishkill was built in 1725 to serve the 440 settlers who lived in the area. This original church was built using local field stone, and the labor of local residents and their slaves. In 1785 the community had outgrown the original church and it was lengthened, had another storey added and now boasted a 120-ft steeple. Throughout the following centuries the church has undergone a succession of expansions and improvements which included the installation of stained glass windows and Dutch chandeliers. When you visit the church today you will be admiring one of the finest examples of a non-residential 18th century building in the whole of New York. The church cemetery still has many ancient tombstones dating back to the mid 1700’s.

Mount Beacon is the highest peak of the scenic Hudson Highlands, a range of mountains which follow the course of the Hudson River. At one time, there was a casino and restaurant at the summit of Mount Beacon, which could be reached via the Beacon Mountain Incline Highway. These days the mountain is a popular outdoor hiking destination which offers outstanding views of the Hudson River Valley and NYC in the distance. There are two hiking trails which you can use to reach the summit – both of them are considered to be quite challenging due to the steep and rocky terrain. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts by the fabulous views.
