Although Carmel is officially a suburb of New York City, it is just far enough away (50 miles) to qualify as a “country” destination where city dwellers can escape for a day trip or weekend away. Many visitors come to Carmel to enjoy peaceful outdoor pursuits like hiking or fishing in Fahnestock State Park or Wonder Lake State Park. If you are seeking peace and enlightenment you can join a meditation class at the Chuang Yen Monastery, or just visit this peaceful place to see the largest Buddha outside of the Eastern hemisphere. Visitors who would like to learn more about the armed forces can visit the Veteran’s Museum at the Veterans Memorial Park, which also offers a range of outdoor activities. CDC information for travelers. Hours/availability may have changed.

Peacefully nestled in the Carmel hamlet, the Chuang Yen Monastery offers devotees and visitors a wonderfully calm and serene change from the bustle of the city. The architecture of the monastery closely follows the teachings of China’s Tang Dynasty, and the central and tallest building, known as the Great Buddha Hall, is home to the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western hemisphere. Visitors are welcome to come and spend a few hours admiring the monastery and soaking up the peaceful atmosphere, or to join open study or meditation sessions. Longer multi-day retreats are also available and guided tours are held on Sundays, followed by a vegetarian luncheon.
