Attraction Spotlight: Adventureland
Located in East Farmingdale, New York, Adventureland is the premiere amusement park on Long Island, offering more than 30 high, mild, and family thrill rides for visitors of all ages. As Long Island’s population increased throughout the mid-2oth century due to major construction of housing developments, a number of small amusement parks and kiddieland attractions were opened to provide summer entertainment for residents.
In the early 1960s, attraction entrepreneurs Herb Budin and Alvin Cohen took an interest in developing an amusement park on the island following a visit to a Chicago amusement industry trade show. The pair purchased a six-acre site in Farmingdale along Route 110 and constructed a central building for the park housing a year-round restaurant and arcade facility. A miniature golf course, carousel, train ride, paddle boats, and small roller coaster were also added to the facility in time for its summer 1962 public opening as Adventure 110 Playland.
Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, the park became a popular summer destination for New York City residents, increasing in popularity following the closures of nearby Steeplechase and Palisades Parks. Major rides and attractions were added to the park, including several roller coasters and European import rides. As a result of the ride importing, Cohen made connections with ride import manager Willy Miller, who purchased the park in 1977. During Miller’s ownership of the park, profits were doubled and the park’s name was changed to Adventureland. A number of new rides were added, including an antique car ride attraction that had been constructed for the 1964 World’s Fair. In 1987, the park was sold to Peter Amoruso and Tony Gentile, who developed several major expansions for the park, including the addition of several water rides and children’s attractions. In 2012, the park celebrated its 50th anniversary of operations.
Rides and Attractions
Today, Adventureland is owned and operated by Peter Amoruso and Tony Gentile and serves as a popular summer attraction for Long Island residents and New York City tourists. Adventureland has been featured in a number of major films and television series, including the 2009 feature film Adventureland, based on director Greg Mottola’s experiences working at the park as a young adult. The park is open from March through September, with limited weekend operations throughout the spring and fall months. Visitors may purchase single ride tickets or buy unlimited Pay One Price wristbands for access to all the park’s attractions. Group ticket sales and park rental packages are also offered for schools and community groups.
As the island’s premiere amusement park facility, the park offers 30 rides, including high, mild, and family thrill wet and dry rides. A number of major thrill rides are offered, including the Turbulence steel coaster, the only spinning roller coaster on Long Island. A Frisbee giant pendulum ride is offered, as well as a Pirate Ship ride, Bumper Cars, and a Musik Express. A Bungee Jumping attraction is offered, not included with standard unlimited-ride park admission. Water rides include the Little Dipper log ride, the Adventure Falls flatboat ride, and the Crocodile Run water maze. For the 2018 season, an indoor Mystery Mansion haunted house dark ride attraction was added to the park.
Family midway rides at the park include a Ferris Wheel with balloon-themed cars and a classic two-story Carousel. The park’s Antique Car ride, developed by Arrow Entertainment, originally debuted its operations at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Other family rides include a Wave Swinger ride, a Surf’s Up magic carpet ride, a Balloon Tower, and a Train ride that encircles the entire park, offering panoramic views of rides and attractions.
A number of children’s rides are offered at the park, including a miniature Lady Bug Coaster which may be ridden together by children and families. Miniature versions of several of the park’s rides are offered, including a Kiddie Carousel, Alfie’s Swings, and an Alfie’s Express train ride. Flat rides include a Caterpillar track ride, an NYC Race car ride, Tea Cups, and a Viking Voyage, while flying rides include Helicopters and Spinning Cars. A Pirate Island children’s playplace is also offered, featuring climbing areas and slides.
In addition to park rides, a climate-controlled indoor Arcade offers a variety of skill, sport, and video games, including Wheel of Fortune and Down the Clown. Game play is available via reloadable player cards, and game tickets may be redeemed for prizes such as plush toys and electronics. Outdoor games are also located throughout the park. A full service family-style restaurant is offered, serving a variety of standard American fare, and a Midway Market shopping area offers park souvenirs, apparel, and toys.
