The town of Waynesville, North Carolina lies just west of Asheville near the Pisgah National Forest, between the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains. One of the treasures of the western region of North Carolina, the Haywood Arts Regional Theater, or also known as HART, is one of the Southeast’s most active theaters and exists to bring semi-professional community theatre to the area. Founded in 1997, the theater in the town of Waynesville, North Carolina today continues to produce a schedule of musicals and plays between the month of January and the month of October. Set on an eight-acre National Historic Site, the beautiful theater building of the Haywood Arts Regional Theater was built in the style of traditional Summer Stock playhouses built during the 1920’s.

The Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts is housed inside the Shelton House of Waynesville, North Carolina. This grand Charleston-style farmhouse was originally constructed back in 1875, featuring a double veranda and providing more to see than simply the handicrafts on display in the museum. Open to the public between the months of April and October, each room in the Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts is full of creations from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from talented designers and artisans from throughout North Carolina. There are comprehensive collections of wood carvings, baskets, pottery, Cherokee and Navajo artifacts, quilts, ironwork, and more.

The Haywood Smokehouse in the western North Carolina mountain town of Waynesville is a place that knows barbecue. The restaurant claims it serves the “best Texas-style barbecue outside of Texas” and prides itself on its smoke brisket, “fall-off-the-bone ribs,” house-made sauces, and house-made sausages.
