Located near Brevard in the Pisgah National Forest, Sliding Rock is a brilliant family destination on a hot sunny day. This remarkable slide-type waterfall cascades over a smooth and gently-sloping rock to form a natural 60 foot water slide. The water cascades into a deep (6-7feet) natural swimming pool, overlooked by 2 viewing platforms. If you are not brave enough to slide down the rock you can use steps to climb down into the icy cold water in the pool. There is on-site parking, restrooms and changing rooms and a lifeguard is usually on duty on busy summer weekends. You can bring along a picnic and enjoy hours of family fun.

Looking Glass Rock is one of the highlights of a visit to Pisgah National Forest. The massive rock towers dramatically above the surrounding forest, where its granite face reflects the sunshine. The hiking trails to the top of the rock are considered to be moderately strenuous due to the 1700 foot elevation in just 3.1 miles. Trails leave from Forest Rd 475 and 475B. Once you reach the summit, which is flat enough to accommodate a helicopter pad, you will be rewarded for your efforts by amazing 360 degree views of the surrounding landscape. The rock is a popular destination for rock climbers and there are several routes traversing the various faces of the monolith.

Located at the western edge of the Pisgah National Forest, about 10 miles from Brevard, the Devil’s Courthouse is a prominent mountain which offers unsurpassed views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is thought that the name derives from a Cherokee legend about a slant-eyed giant who is said to have inhabited the cave beneath the mountain overhang. Today visitors to Pisgah Forest can hike to the summit of the Devil’s Courthouse via a short (half-mile) but strenuous trail. Along the way you can look out for rare species of alpine plants and a variety of soaring raptors. If hiking is not for you, you can admire the Devil’s Courthouse from a lookout point along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
