The preserve was established to protect a significant population of Eastern hemlock trees and other vegetation typically only found within the state's Appalachian Mountain region to the west, which have thrived in the area since the last Ice Age due to tall north-facing bluffs. Three miles of mulched nature trails offer some of the area's best birdwatching opportunities, showcasing a wide variety of native flora and fauna.
