Located at the point where two canyons meet, the village of Tijeras aptly takes its name from the Spanish word for scissors. Here you will find the Tijeras Canyon leading west towards Albuquerque, while the Cedro Canyon leads south towards the Manzano Mountains. The area offers outstanding hiking along a large selection of trails through remarkable scenery. You can encounter diverse habitats such as sheer-walled dry canyons and the densely forested Cibola National Forest. The area was settled by pueblo Indians over 700 years ago and visitors can tour the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site and Museum. Molly’s Bar is the place to go for a drink and great live music. 1.Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site, Tijeras, NM

Visitors are invited to come and get an insight into the lives of the Pueblo people who inhabited this area of Tijeras more than 700 years ago. The archaeological site was excavated between 1974 and 1976 and many structures, artifacts and skeletal remains were uncovered. The site was then backfilled to prevent looters helping themselves to precious relics. Today you can explore the site along a one-third mile gravel trail, assisted by various illustrated signs. Before setting off you can see a concept model of the pueblo to help you find your bearings. There is a small museum at the top of the site, open most weekends and seasonally by appointment.

2.Museum of the American Military Family , Tijeras, New Mexico

The Museum of the American Military Family and Learning Center offers visitors an insight into life in a typical military family and showcases the essential role played by military families in supporting the men and women of the armed forces. As you make your way around the museum you will read poignant accounts of the sacrifices required from military families and of the strength and compassion with which these families support their military husbands, wives, fathers, daughters and sons. The stories celebrate over 400 years of families from all corners of the U.S. and are an eye-opener from those who are not themselves part of a military family.

3.Molly’s Bar, Tijeras, New Mexico

Molly’s Bar has been pulling in a faithful crowd of regulars since it first opened its doors in 1952. Although the original building had to be sacrificed when I-40 replaced Route 66 in 1975, a new structure was built on the same property and continued the legendary Molly’s Bar traditions. The bar is widely known for its spirited live music shows presented in an outdoor amphitheater under the New Mexico stars. Molly’s Bar is open daily and live music shows run from Tuesday to Sunday. The atmosphere is friendly and laid-back – the perfect place to relax with a drink and listen to some great local music.

Visitors who would like to explore the superb Tijeras landscape on horse-back can make their way to Enchanted Gaits Farm for riding lessons and trail-rides. The family-owned equestrian center offers lessons for all levels and guided trail rides in the beautiful Sandia Mountains, Jemez Mountains or in the San Lorenzo Canyon.
