Located in Bergen County, just 10 miles from NYC, Fair Lawn was settled by Dutch immigrants as far back as the early 1700’s. This means that the town has a lot to offer history and architecture enthusiasts, including several buildings which are around 300 years old. Two good examples include the Garretson House and the historic Dutch House Tavern. Outdoor enthusiasts can visit the Saddle River County Park or East Side Park to enjoy hiking and walking. If you are in need of a holistic spa treatment you and book a rejuvenating ritual at the SoloPerTe Skin Care Center. There are several good restaurants including Oceanos, where you can feast on the freshest fish and seafood. Certain attractions may be temporarily closed or require advance reservations. Some restaurants are currently offering pickup only. Hours/availability may have changed.

Garretson Forge and Farm has belonged to the Garretson family since 1719 and is home to one of the oldest historic buildings in the state. The Dutch-Colonial-style Peter Garretson House was built in 1720 and offers visitors a glimpse of New Jersey farm life in the pioneer days. In those early days the farm grew various types of crops, tended by several slaves. Over the centuries parts of the farm were sold and today the historic site covers just 2 acres. Visitors are invited to come and explore the numerous buildings and artifacts which form a living outdoor museum. The extensive gardens are still used to grown various heirloom vegetables, herbs and medicinal plants.

The historic Dutch House Tavern occupies a building which dates back to around 1756. It is thought that the structure was originally a simple single-story farmhouse, built with the characteristic red sandstone which is found throughout Bergen County. Although the original Dutch House has seen several renovations and additions over the years, the wonderful atmosphere still remains and contributes to the tavern’s popularity. In keeping with its “local pub” style, the tavern serves traditional pub food including appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers. There are several wines available by the glass or bottle and a selection of bottled and draft beers.

6.The Swiss Pork Store, Fair Lawn, New Jersey

The name of this legendary German-style deli is rather misleading. The Swiss Pork Store opened in Fair Lawn in the 1950’s when there was still considerable anti-German sentiment due to WWII, so the Swiss and German owners wisely decided to call their shop the Swiss Pork Store. When you step inside you will think you have stepped back in time – all the original 1950’s equipment is still in use, including two enormous smoke houses where prime cuts of pork are prepared. The deli stocks a long list of Swiss/German pork staples including liverwurst, knockwurst, bratwurst and a wonderfully fragrant Westphalian ham which is smoked and aged for a month. The store also boasts a fresh meat butchery section and a good selection of groceries.
