Steeped in history and home to one of the country’s most prestigious schools, Exeter has something to offer all visitors. Historians should not miss touring the American Independence Museum, which is housed in a building dating back to 1721, and the very interesting Gilman-Garrison House which is even older. The quaint town also has an extensive historic waterfront commercial district where many historic buildings now house businesses, restaurants and the fabulous Exeter Fine Crafts Gallery. Visitors can also tour the campus of the Phillips Exeter Academy, a fine co-educational school which dates back to the 18th century. When hunger strikes you can enjoy great food and coffee at Me and Ollie’s Café or excellent farm-to-fork cuisine at Otis Restaurant. Certain attractions may be temporarily closed or require advance reservations. Some restaurants are currently offering pickup only. Hours/availability may have changed.

Essential viewing for anyone interested in US history, Exeter’s American Independence Museum was established in 1991, after an electrician fortuitously discovered a priceless original copy of the Declaration of Independence under the attic floor boards of the historic Ladd-Gilman House. The Ladd-Gilman House, which now houses the museum, was built in 1721 and was home to the prominent Gilman family who played an important role in the establishment of the United States. Visitors to the museum can see the original Declaration of Independence as well as other historic documents and artifacts which focus on Revolutionary history. The museum includes another historic building, the Folsom Tavern (1775) which was moved to the museum site and is included in your guided tour.

The Gilman Garrison House Museum is another of Exeter’s important historic buildings which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You will find the house in the Waterfront Commercial District, which is where the original settlers set up camp back in 1638. The house was built around 1709 and is especially interesting due to its defense-related features which included massive wooden beams, a portcullis and firing portholes built into the floor of the second-floor overhang. Although most of these ancient defensive features have been removed, visitors can still see where they were situated. The museum is filled with interesting exhibits showcasing regional history.
