Ophelia's is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Ken and Cindy McClain, who transformed two buildings built around 1907 and 1948 into a fine dining restaurant and inn. The restaurant was opened in 1999 and named after the book Reviving Ophelia, which struck Cindy as the ideal name to revive the square with a perfect restaurant. The aim was to create a happening place that not only made people feel good about the square, but also made people feel great about living in Independence.
