Ideally located just an hour from the popular tourist destination of Baton Rouge, Zachary offers visitors a unique blend of small-town charm, delicious Southern food and a variety of interesting attractions. The town was established back in the 1880’s and has a well-preserved historic village which is home to a number of buildings which survived a devastating town fire in 1903. Close to town you will find the Port Hudson National Cemetery, located on the site of an important Civil War battle. There are a number of outdoor attractions including golf at the Copper Mill Golf Course and ATV adventures at the Mudd Pits, a former open-pit mine. Certain attractions may be temporarily closed or require advance reservations. Some restaurants are currently offering pickup only. Hours/availability may have changed.

Located on the site of a major Civil War battle, which is recorded as the Siege of Port Hudson, the Port Hudson National Cemetery is the final resting place of at least 4000 men who perished during the battle. After the war the cemetery was extended and eventually became a national cemetery for U.S. veterans. The cemetery retains all its battleground features, and many of the men were simply buried in the trenches where they fell. The historic building which now serves as the administration building was once home to the cemetery caretaker. The cemetery is a peaceful place where visitors are invited to come and pay tribute to all the men who lost their lives pursuing freedom for all.

The Copper Mill Golf Course opened in 2004 and has since established a reputation as one of the finest golf courses in Louisiana. Copper Mill Golf Course is a Links course and is somewhat unique in that it features even numbers of Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5 holes on each nine holes. The course has been carefully laid out following the natural landscape and each of the beautifully manicures fairways makes its way through wetlands, marshes and grasslands. There are no fewer than 13 water hazards, which contribute to making this a tricky but very satisfying course to play. After a pleasantly challenging round golfers can enjoy a meal or drink at the Palmetto Grill.
