Located along the Ohio River, the town and its surrounding nature once served as inspiration for one of the country’s greatest naturalists: John James Audubon. Visitors and locals alike today can learn about this great naturalist, wildlife of the area, and many pieces of art at the John James Audubon Museum. For those who prefer to be out in nature, opportunities for recreational activities can be found in abundance at the Audubon State Park. The Farmer and Frenchman Winery, located just outside of the town of Henderson, is a small farm vineyard, as well as a winery, event venue, and cafe. This elegant, yet rustic and distinctive destination in Kentucky’s Henderson County is owned by a Henderson native and a former Parisian and offers a unique mix of entertainment experiences, local food, and wine tasting that has roots in the past, however, still has its own stylish and fresh twist. The Farmer and Frenchman Winery and Cafe is usually open Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 9:00pm. Reservations are recommended, but not required.

The John James Audubon Museum was established to interpret the work and life of famed naturalist John James Audubon, as well as his family. This is done within a specific timeline of events in the world. Three galleries throughout the museum showcase the story of Audubon, which includes his residency in Henderson between the years of 1810 and 1819. More than two hundred items can be seen on display at the John James Audubon Museum, including artifacts of Audubon’s during his Kentucky years and The Birds of America, the naturalist’s masterwork. There’s also a gift shop with items made by Kentucky artisans.

The Audubon State Park offers a number of hiking opportunities in the area in and around Henderson, Kentucky, offering an ideal escape into nature with trails varying in distance and difficulty. Other outdoor recreational activities possible in this sprawling 700-acre state park include birding, picnicking, tennis, playgrounds, camping, golf, and fishing. Four playgrounds can be found at the Campground, Cardinal, Lakeview, and Sycamore shelters. Fishing opportunities include catfish, bluegill, and largemouth bass in the 28-acre lake at the Audubon State Park. A fishing license is needed and visitors are able to check out free gear for fishing.
