The history of Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) goes back over a century. The land on which the airport was eventually bought was originally used for aviation purposes way back in the early 20th century. It was in 1910 that the Caproni brothers, aviation pioneers in Italy, flew their Cal biplane at the site. Many other pilots used the same land and facilities in the years that followed, with the area also being used for military purposes by the Italian Air Force in the 1920s and 1930s.

In the early 1940s, during the Second World War, the airfield was captured by Nazi forces. The Germans actually created a runway at the airport and expanded its facilities. Then, when the war ended, the local authorities decided to renovate the area and convert it into a key airport for the city of Milan and the surrounding area. The damaged runway was restored and extended, and a new passenger terminal building was constructed. The airport opened up for commercial flights in 1948.

Only ten years later, a new terminal was built and the airport's two runways were extended, but in the 1960s, many major airlines started to focus their services at Linate Airport, which was only a short distance away from Central Milan and was more convenient for passengers flying in and out of the area.

Linate continued to be the main airport for the region for a couple more decades, but eventually reached a point where it could cope no longer and MXP needed to be extended and improved to offer another option for air travel in and out of Milan. This meant that some major surges in air traffic were suddenly seen at MXP. In 1998, for example, MXP had 5.9 million passengers pass through. In 1999, it had almost 17 million. The airport has seen a lot of expansion in recent years in order to become one of Italy's flagship airports.
