Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, the White River State Park is filled with world-class attractions, breathtaking nature, and all kinds of other cultural, educational, and recreational activities and events for visitors of all ages to enjoy. There are more than 250 acres of outdoor fun to have all year round, without ever having to leave the city.
The White River State Park is housed on 250 acres of land surrounding the White River, which flows throughout downtown Indianapolis. The land is full of rich history that features the progressive environmental and cultural changes that have occurred over the years.
In 1979, the first official White River State Park Development Commission was appointed by the governor. Their task was to establish the park and help deal with obstacles that may prevent that from happening. They were successful in founding the park and now it is one of the most beautiful parks in the nation.
In 1988, the Indianapolis Zoo was opened at the White River State Park, followed shortly by the opening of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in 1989. In the years to follow, many more attractions were restored or opened, including the Washington Street Bridge, Victory Field, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial, the NCAA Hall of Champions, the Indiana State Museum, and the Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn (for outdoor concerts and events).
Indiana State Museum – Visitors will experience the best Indiana has to offer when it comes to science, art, and culture.
Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens – Visitors will be able to interact with all kinds of animals from every corner of the world; from the Artic lands to the African plains, visitors can take a trip around the world!
Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art – This museum hosts a variety of Native American and Western works of art. Visitors can learn about the rich history of the native peoples of Indianapolis and their artistic contributions to society.
Victory Field – This field is host to the Indianapolis Indians baseball team. Members of the community and visitors can attend one of America’s greatest traditions at a 14,5000-seat ballpark, which has been named the Best Minor League Ballpark in America.
The NCAA Hall of Champions – Visitors can experience 24 sports represented by the NCAA. All kinds of artifacts and sports memorabilia are on display here alongside interactive exhibits that truly place visitors inside the world of sports.
Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn – Celebrating its 14th year as the top-notch entertainment venue in Indianapolis. Visitors and members of the community can attend exciting events all year round, including holiday-themed, musical performances, and much more.
There are many other attractions, green spaces, and public art spaces for the community to enjoy. Visitors can take a relaxing Segway tour of the park, take a spin on the bicycle paths through historic downtown, or even rent boats to cruise down the river. There is a 1.5-mile historic canal walk through the park’s cultural district, or they can visit the historic pumphouse and tour the lighthouse or the sculpture park. There is no end to the wonderful outdoor attractions at the White River State Park!
There are tons of events to participate in throughout the year at White River State Park! Events include the Mini-Marathon, baseball games, wine and beer tastings, fundraisers, auctions, and festivals, while some upcoming events include:
Indianapolis Great Strides Walk – People within the community can get together to get involved and walk for a great cause. The goal is to promote health and activity through a fun event with food and festivities.
SHE Power Half Marathon and 5K – Women of all ages can participate in this event on June 11. The goal is to empower and celebrate the beauty and strength of all women.
Lifehouse & Switchfoot: Looking for Summer Tour – These two world-famous bands will be performing in a concert at the Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn on August 30.
Santa Landing – Santa will be landing (via helicopter!) at White River State Park on November 24 at noon. Visitors of all ages are welcome to attend and watch him arrive!
