Galena was the home of Ulysses S. Grant and eight other confederate generals. It was also a boom town during the mineral rush and lead mining era, from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. Several impressive buildings were built during this era. A large section of the city has been listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Since the drop in demand for lead, the population has shrunk and tourism has risen to be a major industry. Several outstanding restaurants have been established in the buildings, offering cuisine ranging from Japanese to Greek, historical to contemporary. Even foraged items can be enjoyed here. Some of the restaurants offer meals with stay over packages.
