The name of the restaurant was inspired by the owners' favorite restaurant in Jerome, Arizona, "The House of Joy." The owners, Robert and Robin Trick, thought the name "House of Tricks" was perfect when they opened their own place in 1987 in a remodeled, charming 1920's cottage in downtown Tempe. When House of Tricks first opened, a dozen tables surrounded a vintage stone fireplace in the cottage's cozy interior.

In 1994, the Tricks purchased the historic brick house next door and restored it back to its turn-of-the-century charm. Two elegant dining rooms were created in the new building, which tripled the seating capacity of the restaurant and also allowed for secluded spaces for private parties. An outdoor patio bar and wooden deck were built in the landscaped area between the two buildings and link the two houses together, offering a place for a casual meal or a drink after work. Two other uniquely distinct patios outside offer additional space for alfresco dining and private events.

House of Tricks serves contemporary American cuisine. Menus are inspired by the seasons and change regularly. Each seasonal menu reflects an eclectic blend of flavors and cultures using the freshest vegetables and fruit available. To give more variety to the options on the menu, the restaurant also offers daily specials for lunch and dinner. Diners with special dietary requests are asked to give twenty-four hour notice as a courtesy to the chefs at House of Tricks. The restaurant does their best to accommodate requests, but may not be able to do so during holidays or for large groups.

The lunch menu at House of Tricks offers affordable sandwiches, salads, and entrees that are made with the same attention to detail and creativity as is given to dishes at dinner. The dinner menu features a more culinary adventure with tastes that will delight diners' palates. Every seasonal menu features delicious salads and soups, delicate sauces, and the finest fish and meats. Diners can complete their meal with one of the scrumptious desserts offered and fine themselves looking forward to their next meal before they have even left the restaurant. House of Tricks also offers a Happy Hour Menu, featuring a twist on "bar food" that complements their wide beverage selection.

Adding to the charming and cozy atmosphere of House of Tricks are the restaurant's gardens. Surrounding the building are beautiful gardens. The gardens are maintained by Mary Trick, the owner's mother, who is usually busy tending to the gardens every morning long before any of the staff arrive. Pots of geraniums, daisies, lobelia, and petunias add splashes of stunning colors to the fountains of ferns and grape-covered arbors. There is also a gurgling, mossy pond filled with a family of goldfish in front of the bar in the brick patio.
