Along the banks of the Kentucky River is River View Park, which offers a scenic area off of Wilkinson Boulevard for a riverside picnic. River View Park is located across the street from Frankfort's Holiday Inn Capital Plaza Hotel. In addition to a Shelter/Welcome Pavilion, the picnic area includes several picnic tables for families and friends to enjoy the tranquility and peace of the river while socializing or enjoy a meal. Along a nearby walk trail, visitors can see sixteen historic sites during the one mile walk, including early Native American and even prehistoric cultures. Among the historic sites on the trail are a refurbished bridge from the 1800's and a monument that represent the three original counties of Kentucky.

The Kentucky River View Park is a project that was created by a partnership of several state and local agencies. Located in downtown Frankfort, the park stretches alongside Wilkinson Street along both sides of the Kentucky River. There are several panels along the side of the park's trail that explain the city's numerous connections to the river. Guided tours are offered seasonally as well.

Commemorating the junction of the original three counties of Kentucky is a memorial stone in River View Park. The stone is located at the mouth of one the Kentucky River's tributaries, Benson Creek. There are also several hiking trails, along with the boat dock and picnic shelter, found within the park as part of Frankfort's extensive city-wide trail system. At River View Park's south end is the city's new Ward Oates Amphitheatre, providing a serene setting for theatrical and musical performances. Photo: Frankfort Boat Tours
