Resting on the banks of the Snake River about 100 miles southeast of Boise, the monument spans square miles and boasts 600-foot bluffs that have eroded to expose layers of sedimentary rock with hundreds of ancient fossils. A variety of fossils have been found ranging from birds, reptiles, fish, and mastodons, the most famous of which is the Hagerman Horse, which is the earliest known representative of the genus Equus. In addition to these fascinating fossils, the park is also home to an array of wildlife, including mountain lions, deer, small rodents, and snakes, and there are two designated trails in the northern portion of the monument.
