There are many beautiful regions and areas to explore all around Hawaii, with Kona being a fine example. Located on the western side of the Big Island of Hawaii, Kona is split up into two areas: the North Kona District (Kona 'Akau) and the South Kona District (Kona Hema). The biggest city in the area is Kailua Kona, with the likes of Keauhou, Holualoa, and Kealakekua also located in this area. There are some beautiful rocky beaches and green spaces to explore, and a lot of great hiking trails to be enjoyed.

If you're planning a visit to the Big Island and the Kona region, it's a great idea to hop on board the Kona trolley. Running all around the Kona area, the Kona trolley offers a cheap, reliable, and convenient mode of public transportation for both locals and residents, serving many of the big hotels and resorts in the area, as well as visiting key locations like the Kailua Pier and Kona Inn Shopping Village.

The Kona trolley is one of the best options for people looking to get around the Kona area and visit the major sites and attractions. Since the vast majority of visitors to Hawaii don't use cars, public transportation options like the Kona trolley are essential. With the Kona trolley, you don't need to worry about making your way around or finding places to park; you can simply climb aboard, pay the small fare required for travel, and let the trolley take you exactly where you need to be. With the Kona trolley, you can ride all around the region and enjoy a full Kona vacation without needing to use any other form of public transportation.

Riding the Kona trolley couldn't be simpler. All you need to do is find one of the designated and clearly marked stops and wait for the trolley to arrive. From there, the trolley driver should spot you and stop to let you on and any other passengers off. If you’re worried about the trolley driver not seeing you, you can simply raise a hand and wave to draw attention to yourself, but the drivers will usually be stopping at most stops to let people off anyway. Once you climb aboard, you can pay your fare and take a seat as the trolley sets off along its route once more.

The Kona trolley runs on a route from the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay all the way to the Keauhou Shopping Center. It makes a total of 29 stops and takes about an hour and fifty minutes to complete its full circuit, running the loop six times per day. The first service arrives at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay at 9 am, with the second service arriving at 11 am, then 1.15 pm, 3.25 pm, 5.35 pm, and the final run begins at 7.35 pm, but the schedule can change and vary depending on daily traffic, weather conditions, and special events that might be occurring in the area.

The resort was designed to include as much of the ocean as possible, from its guest rooms, suites, and bungalows with floor to ceiling views to its open-air dining options. The resort has a full-service spa and salon, a state-of-the-art fitness center, tennis club, and multiple golf courses, and many different water sports and activities.

Accommodations

There are three categories of accommodations at the Mauna Lani Resort - guest rooms, guest suites, and bungalows.

The guest rooms offer guests the choice of views of the mountains, gardens, or ocean. The most affordable of those options is a standard room, with views of the Mauna Kea Mountains.

There are two varieties of guest suites at the resort - Ocean View and Ocean Front. Both suite types are located on the upper floors of Mauna Lani and have separate living areas and bedrooms. There is also a wet bar in each of the suite styles. They also each have private balconies.

Resort guests seeking a more private experience can rent one of the luxury bungalows. Each bungalow is a spacious 2700 square feet of indoor space and an additional 1300 square feet outdoor space with a BBQ, private pool, and whirlpool. Guests can choose from Ocean View or Ocean Front bungalows, which each have two master bedrooms and two master bathrooms.

The cost covers a variety of amenities at the resort, including either self-parking or valet for one car, basic in-room internet access, and toll-free and local phone calls. It also gives resort guests access to beach-related amenities, which includes a private double beach cabana, snorkeling equipment, access to the sports and fitness club, and an hour of tennis court time daily. Guests will also be provided two bottles of water a day. They will also receive a 20% discount on select items at the Makana gift shop, and a 10% discount for lunch and dinner at the Bay Terrace Restaurant and Ocean Bar and Grill (this excludes special promotions, happy hour, and special events). At the golf course, resort guests are eligible for a 10% discount on non-sale merchandise at the golf shop and give a junior golfer (under the age of 15) the chance to play free with a paid adult.

Dining

There are three restaurants for resort guests to dine at while visiting the Mauna Lani Resort.

For breakfast, guests can dine at the open-air Bay Terrace restaurant. Breakfast is served daily and can be ordered a la carte or from the extensive breakfast buffet. Also, Sunday’s at the Bay Terrace feature a crab feast buffet for dinner.

Lunch and a cocktail menu are served daily at the Ocean Bar and Grill. The poolside restaurant has a menu including made to order burgers, fresh island salads and peel and eat shrimp as well as smoothies and cocktails.

The Canoehouse is located right on the Pacific Ocean coast. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, resort guests can upgrade to the Captain’s Table for a blind tasting menu. Each meal is designed with at least 85% local ingredients, which are served and explained by the Chef de Cuisine.
