Newnan is located 40 miles west of Atlanta, where it is the country seat of Coweta County. Offering diverse activities, Newnan is a great place to spend a weekend, particularly if you have an interest in history and architecture. The town boasts 6 historic districts which are home to some of the finest historic homes in Georgia. The Male Academy Museum is housed in one of these historic buildings and contains many exhibits dating to the Civil War era, when Newnan was a hospital town. Nature lovers can spend a few peaceful hours exploring the amazing Dunaway Gardens, which cover over 25 beautiful acres or go hiking in the Chattahoochee Bend State Park. You can round off your day with a delicious meal at one of the town’s many restaurants. Certain attractions may be temporarily closed or require advance reservations. Some restaurants are currently offering pickup only. Hours/availability may have changed.

Dunaway Gardens were established by famous golden-years actress Hetty Jane Dunaway. Originally, the gardens were used as a training facility for performers, producers and directors and were frequented by the likes of Walt Disney and Minnie Pearl. In those days the gardens contained an amphitheatre which could seat 1000 people and a quaint barn theatre. Sadly, the gardens fell into disrepair and were totally neglected and forgotten for decades until restoration work commenced in 2000. Today visitors can admire one of the largest floral and rock gardens in the south, complete with spring-fed pools, paths, walls, plantings and waterfalls, covering 25 beautiful acres.

Located in the Old Male Academy, which was a private boy’s school in the 1880’s, the Male Academy Museum is the brainchild of Mrs. Georgia Shapiro of the Newnan Historical Society. The neglected building was carefully restored and has proved to be an ideal home for a collection of interesting artifacts which showcase life in the hospital town of Newnan, both during and after the American Civil War. Highlights of the collection include an authentic restored Civil War flag and an extensive costume and textile collection. There are also several pieces of period furniture and many articles of a medical nature which were used during the Civil War.
