Attraction Spotlight: The Kampong in Miami

The estate that is now known as The Kampong has had a few notable residents, including an Englishman called John Thomas “Jolly Jack” Peacock, who resided there from the 1870s until 1882, and Dr. Simmons, the first woman to practice medicine in the Miami area. It was made into the stunning garden it is today by the legendary Dr. David Fairchild, one of America’s most influential plant collectors and horticulturalists, who relocated here in 1928. Many of the plants Dr. Fairchild collected from his travels across the South Pacific, Asia, and North Africa are still in place in the gardens and form part of the heritage collection.

Events and Activities

Aside from the guided and self-guided tours, The Kampong offers the chance to explore some of the world’s more tropical and unique fruit trees and flowering plants. The word kampong derives from the Malay word for “small cluster of houses” or “village,” and the garden holds fruiting trees such as the candle fruit, peanut butter fruit, breadfruit, and egg fruit as well as mango, palms, coco plums, and cycads.

There are also plenty of tropical flowering trees, all of which build a vivid story of the early exploration of the New World and paint a picture of colour, fragrance, and beauty. The Kampong is also the ideal location for picnics and events such as weddings and parties. Surrounded by a rich ecological history as well as rare and astounding trees and some of the best beauty nature has to offer, The Kampong makes for one of the most relaxing days out you could ever wish for.

Tours

When it comes to tours at The Kampong, you have two options to choose from. You can take part in a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide or you can do a self-guided tour using a detailed guide map, which is the best option for those who wish to amble about freely and take their time. To enter the laboratory installation, you will need to be part of a guided tour.
