Located in Fort Meyers, Florida, the historical Burroughs Home and Gardens aims to educate and inspire visitors about the history of the area, the architecture, and the culture of the time. Visitors can host their next special event or enjoy a relaxing tour through one of the oldest homes with a formal garden in the Fort Meyers area.

Built in 1901, The Burroughs Home is a classic Georgian Revival Mansion on approximately 2.5 acres of land in downtown Fort Meyers along the Caloosahatchee River. The house was designed by popular architect at the time, George Barber, from Knoxville, Tennessee.

The house was purchased by the Burroughs family in 1918 and the family quickly became popular winter visitors, throwing spectacular parties for the wealthy and powerful. The house served as a home for the wealthy and elite members of society at the time. Many special events were hosted at the house throughout the years, and welcomed guests like the fords, the Edisons, and the Firestones.

When the last living member of the family passed away, the home was left to the city under the stipulation that the house and gardens become a library, park, or museum. In 1984, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places and in 1994 it was named a historical landmark.

What to See:

The historical home and its surrounding gardens provide visitors with a large variety of sites, antique furnishings, fine decorative arts, and beautifully landscaped formal gardens. The massive mansion is representative of the privileged life of the upper class at the time of the Jazz Age.

The 2 ½ story home is more than 6,000 square-feet and features 11-foot ceilings, huge fireplaces, pine floors, and an epic grand staircase. There are stained glass windows, sweeping verandas, and dozens of specialized rooms including servant’s quarters, a parlor, and a music room. The house even had running water, indoor plumbing, and electricity – a rarity at the time.

A secret garden with a free-standing fountain, a reflecting pool, a grotto, tennis courts, dance floors, and a gazebo can all be found on the grounds. Personal belongings of the Burroughs family can also be found within the house, including their original sleigh beds, the kitchen table, some favorite pieces of art, and the dining room set.
