One of the top premium cruise lines, Holland America was founded in 1873 as a shipping and passenger line. The cruise line offers seven-, ten-, and 14-day cruises to the Caribbean, 10- to 24-day Panama Canal cruises, special holiday cruises, extended cruises to South America, European cruises, and Asia/Pacific voyages. Seven- and 14-day cruises to Alaska are offered from Seattle, Vancouver (B.C.), Seward (Alaska), and San Francisco. Ships sail to the Inside Passage and on the Golf of Alaska Glacier Route from May to September.

The company offers numerous cruisetour packages through the company's subsidiary Holland America Tours. Packages range from adventure shore excursions to full itinerary land tours of Alaska and the Yukon.

In 1988, the company purchased the luxury Windstar Sail Cruises. In 1989, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Carnival Corp., the largest cruise company in the world.

Luxury Suites

The cruise line is offering a generous number of suites and verandahs on its itineraries. The company has three Vista-class ships in Alaska, in addition to its five other ships. Each Vista-class ship has 162 suites in seven categories, as well as 461 Deluxe staterooms with ocean views. Oosterdam and Westerdam will be sailing roundtrip from Seattle. Vancouver roundtrip itineraries are also available.

Suites give passengers more space, private terraces and Neptune Lounge access for Penthouse and Deluxe suite guests. Each Vista-class ship has two Penthouse Suites which measure 1,318 square feet, 60 Deluxe Suites ranging from 510-700 square feet, and 100 Superior Suites. The Superior accommodations measure 398 square feet and feature a verandah, sitting area, two desks, and a bathroom with separate shower and Jacuzzi tub and two sinks. Rates start at $1,479 double occupancy.

Neptune Lounge offers guests personalized service for making reservations for shore excursions, spa services, car rentals and the Pinnacle Grill restaurant. If you don't want to splurge on a suite, Deluxe staterooms have 254 square feet of space and allow you to view the scenery during the journey.

ms Amsterdam

ms Amsterdam in an R Class Ship with 1,380 passenger capacity and 647 crew. The ship was dedicated on October 2000. Gross tonnage is 60,874, the length is 780 feet, the beam is 105.8 feet and the ship is registered in the Netherlands. The ship sails in Hawaii, Australia, Asia, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, South America and Antarctica.

The ship's most spacious accommodations are the two Penthouse Verandah Suites which measure 1,159 square feet in size. The 50 Deluxe Verandah Suites measure 556 square feet in size and the 120 Verandah Suites 120 measure 292 square feet in size. There are 383 Standard Outside staterooms with 197 square feet of space and 135 Standard Inside staterooms with 182 square feet of room. Of the 690 staterooms, 21 are wheelchair accessible. An array of spa and fitness facilities allow passengers work out and relax. If you want to stay active, there is a fitness center, tennis court and basketball court. For relaxation, the ship offers spa treatment rooms, dual saunas, loofa scrub rooms, thermal beds and a beauty salon/barber shop.

ms Westerdam

The Westerdam is the company's third state-of-the-art Vista-class ship with two swimming pools, a spa, steam rooms and hydrotherapy pools. The ship has a casino, a library and card room, and a number of dining options. Vista-class ships offer almost 85 percent of the staterooms with ocean views and two-thirds of guest accommodations with private verandahs. The staterooms and suites are furnished with Euro-top mattresses, white cotton bed linens, massage showerheads and deluxe bathrobes.

The spacious Penthouse and Deluxe Verandah suites have duvets on the beds and fully-stocked mini-bars. Greenhouse Spa and Salon is modeled after the Greenhouse day spa in New York City. It offers a selection of treatments and signature services.

The 11-by-22-foot hydrotherapy pool uses heated seawater and high power water jets to soothe sore and tense muscles. The spa has 11 treatment rooms, a thermal suite for relaxation, saunas and steam rooms. The fitness facility has a view of the ocean and is equipped with Cybex weight training machines, treadmills, stair-step machines and free weights. Personal trainers and fitness evaluations are also offered.

The Westerdam has a basketball court, volleyball court and a promenade deck for fitness walks around the ship. The computer generated golf simulator displays world-renowned golf courses on a giant projection screen and tracks player' shots. Vacationers can play alone or with a friend. Private lessons are also offered. There is an additional fee for golf activities. Entertainment aboard ms Westerdam includes late-night shows, cabaret performers, classical music concerts, comedians and other shows.

The main Vista Show Lounge features a large stage complete with fly loft for scenery, a movable pit for the live orchestra and a sophisticated sound system. For those who like to dance, there is the Northern Lights dance club which plays an assortment of music ranging from alternative to classic dance tracks. The Crow's Nest offers more classic dancing. HAL Kids Program offers the KidZone, a play area for younger kids. Club HAL welcomes kids ages 5 to 17. There is childcare for kids on port days. Teens have access to the Wave Runner teen area which has a dance floor, a large screen movie corner, a computer game area and video game room. The ship facts:

ms Zuiderdam

ms Zuiderdam is a Vista-class ship and the largest ship in the fleet at 85,000 gross registered tons and 1,848-passenger capacity. Because of its size, the Zuiderdam offers its passengers an array of activities, entertainment, accommodations and restaurants. The ship has a health spa, 10 decks with two glass elevators on the exterior with open ocean views, and several dining options. There are six lounges, bars and a nightclub where passengers can chat with friends and dance at night.

The ship offers dataports for e-mail and Internet access in every stateroom. The Zuiderdam has 924 staterooms, 67% with verandahs that overlook the ocean. The 461 Deluxe Verandah Outside staterooms measure 254 square feet in size and have a 54-square-foot verandah, perfect for relaxing on your cruise.

If you are on a honeymoon or celebrating a special occasion, the two Penthouse Suites are the most luxurious, featuring a 318-square-foot terrace with a private hot tub and outside dining area.
