Annandale Falls

Annandale Falls is located a short distance from the capital. Here, visitors are welcome to take an invigorating swim or relax near the falls. Tropical flowers and trees can be found in the surrounding gardens. Unlike some of the other waterfalls in Grenada, which require you to hike for as long as three hours (each way), visitors can see Annandale Falls without even getting out of the car. This is a great stop for someone who has limited time in Grenada. Local bus transportation is the most inexpensive way to see Annandale Falls. Take the No. 7 bus from the St. George’s Bus Terminal and you can get off within a quarter mile of the waterfalls. There is a nominal entry fee to see the falls.

Plantations that were established under the system of land allocation (under French rule) date back to the 1600s, which is when Belmonte Estate was also established. Mr. John Aitcheson Jr. purchased the property from the Bernago family, who were the original owners. Mr. Aitcheson leased the property for a period of 13 years to Mr. Alexander Campbell Esg, who also happened to be the owner of the adjoining estate at the time. Campbell was executed in 1795 after Fedon’s Rebellion. He was one of two cited out of 40 prisoners. The estate was left to Aitcheson’s eldest daughter, Bethia, who had instructions to sell the estate and share the proceeds with her two sisters and cousin. The total value of the estate and its assets was $2.5 million in USD by today’s standards when Aitcheson died.

Approximately 8,000 people live on Carriacou. While visiting the island during the month of April, you can experience some of the musical customs of the occupant’s African ancestors at the String Band Music Festival. Visiting Carriacou Island offers an authentic experience.

The Concord Falls consists of three waterfalls and is situated on the western side of the island on the edge of the forest reserve. The water is crystal clear and extremely cold. This is a great adventure for someone who enjoys a good hike. There is a paved road leading to the first, most accessible waterfall. Visitors can swim in the cool mountain stream and should bring appropriate clothing. The second waterfall is bigger and taller than the first and is a 45-minute hike. You will walk through a nutmeg plantation on the way. The third and final waterfall is off a trail that is easily recognizable, but it is off the beaten track. Plan for a long day of hiking if you want to see all three waterfalls.
