History of Airport Code YYZ
It was in 1937 that the Government of Canada decided to lay out plans for the construction of not one, but two airports in the Toronto area. Several locations were proposed, including the Toronto Islands, which would later serve as the site for Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The Toronto neighborhood of Malton, just slightly northwest of downtown Toronto, was also chosen, and this is where airport YYZ would eventually be constructed.
However, the government had quite a large job on their hands as the land they wanted to use was owned by over a dozen different farmers. The Toronto Harbour Commission had to speak with the farmers individually and propose sums and settlements to acquire these lands. Eventually, a purchase of over 1,400 acres was agreed with the farmers, with one of their old farmhouses actually being used as the first airport office and terminal building. The breakout of World War II interrupted plans for the airport, with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan using the site to train pilots.
In 1946, however, the airport began to be used for passenger flights once again. Additional terminals were built over time, and the airport got its official name in 1984. It was named in honor of Lester B. Pearson, who had served as the 14th Prime Minister of Canada and had also won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1957. From then on, the airport was officially known under the name Lester B. Pearson International Airport, but the name Toronto Pearson International Airport is generally used in order to denote the location of the airport.
