Starting in Vallejo just north of Oakland and stretching 35 miles northward along the famous Route 29, the Napa Valley’s flat valley floor and the surrounding volcanic hillsides are covered with orchards and vineyards. Small towns such as Napa, Yountville, Rutherford, and Calistoga are interspersed between rolling farmlands, which are dotted with famous wineries and beautiful estates, some boasting palatial mansions, Victorian houses and European-style castles.
The Sonoma County region begins north of the San Francisco Bay area in Petaluma and extends northwards to Healdsburg. Comprised of broad flat fields, gently rolling hills and parts of the adjacent Pacific Coast, Sonoma County is divided into several sub-districts such as Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley and Sonoma Valley. The town of Santa Rosa, which lies at the center of the district, and its neighboring towns offer some quaint inns, spas, and restaurants while the surrounding farmlands and vineyards are home to some of the world’s finest wineries.
Mendocino County and Lake County lie immediately north of the Sonoma and Napa Valley regions and attract fewer crowds than the better-known Napa and Sonoma Valleys, but still boast some excellent wineries and high-quality wines.
