Established in 1964 as the Under Sea Gardens, Ocean World Aquarium began life in a barge built to be an aquarium that was floated down to Crescent City from Seattle and set in the harbor. Visitors to this unique new marine park could venture below the surface of the harbor waters to view the sea life through large observation windows. The barge was then removed from the harbor basin and onto dry land in 1985 where it became the Undersea World Aquarium, and then the Ocean World Aquarium. Today, it houses an abundance of sea life, including seals, sharks, rays, sharks, and wolf eels in tanks holding over 500,000 gallons of sea water. Visitors can also enjoy an interactive tidal pool, petting sharks and watch a highflying sea lion performance.
Visitors to the Ocean World Aquarium can enjoy a fully guided tour led by highly trained staff who share their knowledge and passion about the creatures of the sea. Educational, entertaining and suitable for the whole family, the 45-minute tour begins with the Touch and Feel Tide Pool where guests have the opportunity to see and touch many a variety of interesting and unusual creatures that live along the rocky shoreline of the Pacific Northwest. The tour then descends into the aquarium to see sharks, seals, sea lions, wolf eels, and bat rays, all of which live in the waters off the Californian coast.
Visitors then have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pet and touch a real shark, one of the most amazing creatures on earth. The tour ends with a fun-filled and high-flying Seal and Sea Lion Performance, where the Aquarium’s resident seals and sea lions will amaze guests with their antics.
The Ocean World Aquarium is located in South Crescent City and is open to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, daily. The Aquarium offers guided tours through the facility for all ages, which includes shark petting and a seal lion show and there is a gift shop that sells a variety of aquarium and ocean-related books, toys, items, and gifts.
